From The First Mosque To “The Next First” - A Story Of Perseverance

In 1938, Hilwie Hamdan led the Muslim Women's Community to unite diverse faiths, raising funds for Al Rashid Mosque - Canada's first. This pioneering effort laid the foundation for Edmonton's Muslim community.

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women later championed Al Rashid Mosque's recognition as cultural heritage. In 1992, amid anti-Muslim sentiment, it was relocated to Fort Edmonton, cementing its place in the city's history.

Our ancestors' unwavering faith and determination paved the way for open practice of Islam in Western society. Their courage in adversity has left an indelible mark on Canadian history and Edmonton's community.

Today, Edmonton's thriving Muslim community stands proud of its historic firsts. Our "Next First" milestone aims to continue this legacy by building a cutting-edge campus, preserving Islamic heritage for future generations.
